Nido Program (6 – 18 Months)

In a Montessori Nido community, we honor this special time with great care, respect and joy.

What Is the Montessori Method?
The Montessori Method is an approach to early childhood education that has nurtured independence, problem-solving, creativity, and a love of learning for over 100 years. More than simply childcare, our private Nido program thoughtfully supports each child’s individual development through carefully prepared environments and attentive guidance.

How Do Montessori Infants Spend Their Day?

Emotional Development
At Cool Springs Montessori, our program supports infants in building a sense of trust and security. Through consistent routines and responsive care, children develop strong emotional foundations and meaningful relationships with the adults and children around them.

Social Development
Infants begin developing social awareness by observing and interacting with others. They gradually learn about reciprocal interactions, recognize social cues, and experience the early foundations of cooperation and connection.

Physical Development
Our environment encourages natural movement and exploration. Infants strengthen their reflexes, develop body control, and build hand-eye coordination. Children are given the freedom to move within a carefully prepared environment designed to support their developmental needs while guides observe and support their growth.

Cognitive Development
Cognitive growth begins with exploration. Through hands-on discovery, infants investigate objects in their environment using their senses. They begin to understand concepts such as cause and effect, same and different, and object permanence. One-on-one interactions with guides support language development as infants listen, respond, babble, imitate sounds, and gradually discover the purpose of spoken language.

Music and Language
Music is woven throughout the day in our infant classroom. Through songs, storytelling, instruments, movement, sign language, and puppet play, children experience rich auditory and sensory stimulation that supports brain development, rhythm, communication, and expression.

What happens at Cool Springs Montessori

In our classroom, your child will be guided by loving, nurturing teachers who are deeply committed to the well-being of young children and continuously trained in child development. Together, we prepare peaceful, supportive, and safe environments where a child’s natural sense of wonder, curiosity, exploration, independence, and discovery can come alive.

Our Nido classroom is a prepared space where children can safely explore while feeling secure in the presence of attentive caregivers. The environment includes developmental appropriate furniture and materials that support movement and independence. Safety is paramount, but we intentionally avoid equipment that restricts a child’s freedom of movement. Instead, children have access to low mirrors that reflect body movement, bars for pulling up and practicing balance, child-sized tables and chairs rather than highchairs, and individual floor beds for rest.

As your child grows, the classroom also becomes a place for meaningful first experiences with food and self-care. We support baby-led weaning, offering opportunities for children to explore a variety of foods at their own pace. It is often a joyful–and yes, sometimes messy–time, and we are excited to guide children through these early experiences of independence. You may also notice gentle beginnings of toileting awareness in the classroom. This does not mean placing infants on the toilet before they are ready, but rather following each child’s natural interest in participating in their own self-care routines.
